International Student Profiles
I created thenanyan.com to increase awareness and interest for international programs at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. These profiles made taking on an international degree in a foreign country feel more accessible, as well as provided prospective students an idea of what their lives might be like as long-term residents of Shenzhen, China.
Hannah Getachew
“Before coming to study law at the PKU School of Transnational Law, Hannah Getachew lived in England, Canada, France, Kenya, and Beijing among several other places—so needless to say she’s quite used to living ‘abroad.’”
Kevin Kurnia
“‘Hi Kevin!’ exclaims the barista as we come up to the coffee counter to order. Everyone knows Kevin: faculty, staff, both international and Chinese students—even the Starbucks baristas all know him by name.”
Identity Abroad Pages
These program-specific pages aim to better set expectations of life abroad for U.S. university students of varying identities. They cover everything from how race and gender are perceived in local communities to the accessibility of on-site facilities. I wrote copy based off of input received from on-site staff living in those locations, as well as student feedback from evaluations.
Identity Abroad: CET Japan
“Culturally, sexuality is not openly discussed and many Japanese people have never heard the term ‘LGBTQ.’ Former students have described their Japanese peers’ reactions to LGBTQ identities as neither strongly positive or negative, but mostly curious.”
Identity Abroad: CET Prague
“…the local language and culture of the Czech Republic is not equipped with the same levels of political correctness that students may be accustomed to in the US. As such, students may find local attitudes to be more brusque, and they may be on the receiving end of blunt questions or remarks.”
Non-profit Organization Copy
I wrote and edited copy as part of the Congolese Integration Network’s 2018 website redesign.
Congolese Integration Network
Overall Website Copy
“We provide our community members with access to critical resources including housing assistance, interpretation services, and employment support. By bringing community together and advocating for their health and well-being, we facilitate the social, economic, cultural, and spiritual integration of Congolese immigrants and refugees into their homes in Washington state.”
Lifestyle Copy
This web copy functioned both as content marketing and as introductory material for prospective students interested in enrolling at PKU Shenzhen.
The Nanyan Observer
Life in Shenzhen
“Originally a fisherman’s village, it is now a vast and modern city of 14 to 15 million people. Located just a quick trip across a border checkpoint from Hong Kong and just south of Guangzhou via a 30-minute bullet train ride, the city itself is well-connected, affording you the opportunities of three vastly different metropolises.”
